HYNEK MARTINEC SOLO EXHIBITION

Thank You For Looking At Me will present the culmination of an eight years process for the Czech artist Hynek Martinec. This will be the first time OHSH Projects presents a solo exhibition by the artist, who we have exhibited twice in ‘Still Life / Life Still’ (2022) and ‘ABSURD’ (2022). The exhibition is being produced in collaboration with Parafin, who have represented Hynek since 2014.

Since 2015 Hynek’s painting Thank You For Looking At Me has been in a mediative state - isolated and exposed to the elements on a cabin in remote Iceland. In Hynek’s own words he felt ‘that the painting needed to have extra space’ before it was exhibited. Now, seven years later, with the markings of nature, rain, wind and the changing seasons, the painting will be exhibited at OHSH Projects alongside a documentary film piece.

Hynek will also present an ambitious mural alongside a collection of Vanitas paintings. The mural of charcoal drawings will reference a travel book from the 1840s, Voyage en Islande et au Groenland, by Paul Gaimard, a French surgeon and explorer. Hynek came across the book at the home of Icelandic friends around the time he embarked on the Thank You For Looking At Me project. To close the project, it felt fitting for Hynek to create this mural inspired by the book.

(b.1980, Czech Republic) Hynek received the prestigious BP Young Artist Award (2007) for his hyperrealistic portraits. His paintings are inspired by Old Masters and/or photographs, which link the past with the future, using modern technologies.
